What to wear for newborn family photos
Planning your newborn family photos and wondering what to wear? You're not alone! As a Tampa newborn photographer, I've styled dozens of families in my cozy, white lifestyle studio. Here's what I recommend so your newborn photos feel calm and beautiful.
Light colors work best in my studio
My lifestyle space is all white, which means light, soft, neutral colors always photograph best. Think whites, creams, pale grays, soft blues, pinks, and light sage.
Avoid bright colors like neon's or even all black. They can create harsh contrast and pull attention away from baby.
Don't match, coordinate
Instead of everyone wearing the same thing (especially white!), choose a coordinated palette. Most clients choose two to three colors that flow together across everyone's outfits. You'll look cohesive and natural without blending in together.
Need ideas? I've created a Pinterest board of color palettes that work beautifully in my space.
What should baby wear?
Don't worry - baby is taken care of! I'll wrap your newborn in a soft swaddle that coordinates with your family's color palette. You don't need to bring anything but baby and milk.
Sibling outfit tips
If big brother or sister is joining, keep their outfit comfortable and in the same soft color range. The more comfortable they are, the happier they'll be for both snuggles and smiles.
Here's what most families choose:
- Little girls: Simple cotton dresses or rompers in white, cream, pink, or soft florals
- Little boys: Knit joggers or linen pants with a henley top or plain tee in a coordinating tone. Jeans are great too!
- Toddlers: Something soft, tag free, and easy to move in. Avoid stiff collars or scratchy materials.
Hot tip: Bring a clean snack (like puffs or applesauce) just in case we need it!
Studio wardrobe options for mom
If choosing your own outfit feels overwhelming, I do have a small studio wardrobe with a few dresses available for moms. These are in soft, flattering fabrics that photograph beautifully in my space.
I'll have your dress choice steamed and ready when you arrive. Just let me know ahead of time if you'd like to use one.
A quick checklist before your session
Here's a quick checklist to keep things stress-free:
- Choose light colors
- Coordinate, don't match
- Avoid logos and graphic tees
- Baby will be wrapped and that is provided
- No need to worry about shoes - we won't see them in pictures
- Bring a snack to help with cooperation
Still not sure what to wear?
Outfits can feel like big decision, but it doesn't have to be stressful. You're welcome to send over outfit ideas before your session, and I'll happily help you choose some options or help you brainstorm.
